Six Recall Petitions Stopped Before They Started. Now Lavon's Council Will Decide Their Fate.

Before a single signature could be gathered, six attempts to recall Lavon city officials hit a wall.

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, the Lavon City Council will take up a request from a petitioners' committee asking it to overturn a ruling by the city attorney. According to the meeting agenda, the attorney has determined that six proposed recall affidavits or petitions are "legally insufficient for failing to state any specific or adequate grounds for recall" under the city charter. The committee is asking the council to review that decision, a step the charter allows when a recall effort is rejected.

The agenda doesn't say which officials the petitions target, who filed them or what reasons they give. One number stands out, though: Lavon has exactly six elected officials, a mayor and five council members. Whether the six petitions name six different people, or several target the same official, isn't clear from public records available ahead of the meeting.
